Feeling Empty? Reclaiming Your Soul in the Fast Age
Seriously, can we just pause for a second? Look around. Everything is moving so fast. Like a never-ending conveyor belt of "new and next." What feels amazing and exciting today is old news by tomorrow . And sometimes, in all this speed, in all this noise, it feels like something important is getting left behind. Something deep inside you. Your soul.
We get caught in the current of it all, right? The endless scrolling, the pressure to keep up, the feeling like we're always chasing something just out of reach. It can leave you feeling… honestly, a little lost and a lot empty. Like you’re just going through the motions, living a life that’s constantly being redefined by someone else.
The Lie of "Having It All": Influencers and the Empty Promise
We see them everywhere. The influencers with their perfect lives, their perfect things. They make it look like owning certain stuff is the secret to happiness, to feeling valuable. They parade possessions like they're badges of honor, telling you (sometimes without saying a word) that you need these things to be enough.
But let's peel back the layers. Here's a truth worth holding onto: The real value isn't in the objects themselves. Objects only feel special because of the value of the person carrying them.
When we buy into this idea that external things define us, we start forgetting the most important person: ourselves. We get trapped in comparing our reality to someone else's carefully curated highlights. "I don't have that car." "My watch isn't fancy enough." "I can't afford that brand." It's a fast track to feeling less than, to falling into inferiority complexes that just aren't true.
And the worst part? We give away our power. We let algorithms and people we don't even know dictate what we want, what we think is important. Do you really think they lose sleep over your well-being or your connection with Allah? Probably not.
So you stay up late, scrolling, watching them sell you a dream. You wake up the next day feeling heavy, tired, and wondering why your life doesn't measure up. "Why wasn't I born into wealth?" creeps into your mind. You feel like you have nothing of worth. It's easy to get caught in that dark space, feeling stuck.
In these moments, without even realizing it, we hand over the keys to our inner peace to Shaytan. We trade the incredible gift of our life – the potential for growth, for purpose, for connection with Allah – for the fleeting, shallow glow of whatever temporary trend is screaming for our attention. Fashion changes every season, right? But your life, your soul, goes with you to your final breath. Which one holds more real value?
The Fast-Fading Face of "Beautiful": What Happens When Your Soul Dries Out?
And don't even get me started on the ever-changing standard of beauty. What's called "beautiful" today can feel like yesterday's news tomorrow. Who's deciding this anyway? And by whose standard?
Movies, commercials, social media feeds – they're not just entertainment. They're powerful tools, constantly shaping what we think is desirable. They want you to consume, not to think deeply about what true beauty is.
They show you a picture, a look, a style… and subtly make you forget the real source of radiance: your soul. You might look in the mirror and only see the surface, the outline of a person, but feel a profound emptiness inside. They sell you the "value of appearance" so aggressively that you can lose sight of the fundamental truth: without a healthy, vibrant heart and soul, the physical form eventually loses its light anyway.
And when your soul feels neglected, when it dries out from lack of genuine connection and nourishment, looking at your reflection can feel like staring into a vacant space.
The Heart That Still Beats: Even When You Feel Invisible
Maybe this hits close to home. Maybe you've felt that heavy feeling, asking yourself, "Who would even want me?" or feeling like your future is just… empty.
When we compare ourselves to fake highlights and let external standards define us, it's easy to feel like you've given a piece of your heart away to something that wasn't worthy of it. Sadness can feel like a weight on your chest, worry can become a constant hum in your mind, and anxiety can drain every ounce of your energy. It's like you've put your true identity on pause, chasing the illusions presented by others.
Your body is going through the natural process of aging, that’s just how life works in this Dunya. But your heart, your soul… that’s where the real you lives. And that beat is still there, a powerful reminder that you are alive and capable of so much more.
So Ask Yourself: In Whose Hands Have You Placed Your Heart?
Take a deep breath. In all this busyness, with all these external voices shouting for your attention, where are you? Where have you placed the most valuable thing you own – your heart, your inner self?
Whose opinion matters most to you? Who is truly dictating the direction of your life and your emotions?
The Answer That Brings Peace: Flee to Allah
There is an answer to this feeling of being lost. There is a way out of the emptiness. It's a truth that has guided hearts for centuries, and it's still the answer today. In the Quran, Allah says:
"So flee to Allah." (Qur’an 51:50)
Think about that simple, powerful command. "Flee." When you're in danger, when you're overwhelmed, you run to safety. And in the chaos and confusion of the modern world, the only true safety, the only real refuge, is found in returning to Allah.
The great scholar, Abu Bakr al-Warraq, explained this verse in a way that speaks directly to our struggles:“Flee from the obedience of Shaytan to the obedience of the Most Merciful.”
That's the shift. Stop letting the algorithms, the trends, the whispers of doubt dictate your life. Stop giving your power away to things and people that don't truly care about your well-being – in this life or the next.
You are not meant to be a follower of algorithms. You are a servant of Ar-Rahman, The Most Merciful.
This is your call to action. It's time to reclaim what is rightfully yours. Reclaim your unique identity, the one Allah designed for you. Reclaim your soul from the things that are draining its energy and light. Reclaim your heart and find its true home in connecting with your Creator.
This transformation isn't instant. It requires making conscious choices, day by day. It calls for discipline – gently training yourself to do what is good for your soul, even when it’s hard. It requires a growth mindset, believing in your ability to change and improve. It's about disconnecting from the noise that makes you feel inadequate and reconnecting with the source of all peace and strength.
Stop feeling down about what you lack based on the world's ever-changing list. Start building the incredible, valuable person Allah created you to be, from the inside out.
Action Step: Let's make this real. What is ONE small thing you can do today to "flee to Allah"? Maybe it's taking five minutes to remember Him in silence. Maybe it's making your next prayer with more focus. Maybe it's replacing 15 minutes of scrolling with reading a few verses of Quran or a beneficial Islamic text. Choose one small step and take it with the intention of returning to Him.
Reclaim your soul. Reclaim your heart. The true journey, the one that brings lasting peace, starts now.
